The convertible maxi slip for dress
I can't possibly be the only woman who's totally frustrated with the lack of slip options that work under racerback, strapless or one shoulder dresses, or really slips of any kind for that matter. I have a handful of maxi dresses that need extra coverage even with the built in lining... so I got creative.
NEWS ALERT: someone was smart and finally invented colored elastic. Tan, brown or any color of the rainbow is available now.
A slip that can be slipped up underneath your bra to hang down OR can be worn with maxi skirts. Here's how to make yours:
- Measure around chest directly under your bust after expelling all air from your lungs to get your band width measurement. That number will be the length of elastic you'll need.
- Divide that number in half and add it to the band width number. This will be your lining width.
- Measure from under bust at band width down to the floor. That number will be the length of lining you'll need.
- Sew lining to elastic while pulling elastic taut so the lining is evenly distributed along the length of elastic.
- Add trim along hem and finish edges.
- Sew 1/2" seam from elastic down centerback. Taking that extra inch out of the elastic will help keep slip taut under bra. I had to add a center back slit to mine for movement, finish edges.
It felt good getting back into my sewing routine after a year hiatus. I have a pile of sewing projects set aside so hoping this easy little slip project was enough of a push to get me back in the motions again.
